The Satsuki Azalea are probably one of the most popular flowering bonsai grown today. The Satsuki flowers from the end of May to early July and when not in bloom, it makes a lovely
outdoor evergreen tree. The flowers are showy and are often multi coloured on the same plant. A Satsuki azalea in full bloom is a wonderful sight.
Location & Temperature
They are hardy in mild climates and can tolerate as low as -7°C for short periods, and an open structure is often adequate protection. If there is a prolonged period of cold you can protect in an unheated greenhouse. Can be kept in full sun or partial shade.
Watering
Water regularly and generously throughout the year, but especially when the plants are in bloom. The petals are easily damaged, so take care not to splash them with water. Keep moist during the winter.
Pruning
Deadhead directly after flowering. Pruning can also be done at this time.
Repotting
Check to see if your tree needs repotting every three or four years.
Feeding
Apply a weak feed after flowering and again in Autumn.
