Pinus Thunbergii or Japanese Black Pine is a classic outdoor, evergreen species of tree to use for Bonsai purposes and it is also very popular in Japan. They have an upright habit, stiff, dark green needles borne in pairs and dark, fissured bark that gives the trunks an imposing, characterful appearance and increases their popularity. Native to north-eastern China, Japan and Korea

Location

Outside in full sun.

Temperature

Hardy in most temperate areas. However, when winter temperatures are likely to fall below -5°C for prolonged periods, protect trees in a frost-free shed or greenhouse

Watering

Pines dislike permanent moisture so be careful not to over water. Good drainage is necessary.

Pruning

Can be pruned in summer and late autumn. Be careful not to cut through the needles and this will cause them to turn brown.

Repotting

Check to see if the tree needs repotting every 3 or 4 years.

Feeding

Apply general feed in mid spring - early summer.

For more advice please visit our FAQ page and YouTube channel.

Please Note: Please note that measurements given are approximate not exact. Measurements given are from the bottom of the pot to the top of the tree. Due to their nature trees grow and whilst in our care may need pruning, this means the tree that you receive may differ in size to that given in the description. The appearance of the tree may vary depending on the season.
