Sageretia or Bird plum cherry, is a semi-evergreen tree (which means that it is will drop its leaves for a short period) and easy to keep. This species is widely used for bonsai. It has small glossy leaves and small, black berries. It’s a favourite of bonsai enthusiasts in China and is a popular indoor bonsai. It is suitable to most styles and a good tree for a beginner to bonsai.

Location

When kept indoors it needs a bright (but needs protection from intense direct sunlight. In summer move outdoors and place in full sun.

Temperature

If kept inside they prefer to be kept on the cool side as they do not like hot and dry rooms. They like a sunny, draught-free position and a minimum winter temperature of 12°C.

Watering

Water frequently in summer, but never overwater and do not allow compost to dry out completely. Keep just moist in the winter. Leaves will benefit from being misted in summer especially if kept indoors.

Pruning

Prune vigorous growth during the growing season. Be careful not to cut through the leaf as this will turn them brown.

Repotting

Repot when needed. Check every 2 or 3 years.

Feeding

During the growing season ensure they are fed well which helps the leaves to remain green.

Please Note: The picture is for guidance only. It is not generally possible to send the tree in the picture. Please note that measurements given are approximate not exact. Due to their nature trees grow and whilst in our care may need pruning, this means the tree that you receive may differ in size to that given in the description.
