Ilex serrata or Japanese Holly is a deciduous holly grown for its bright red berries. It has small, oval, pointed leaves, which turn slightly yellow in autumn. Japanese holly is a popular tree in Japan, and fine specimens are in the informal upright style. Native to Japan and China, would need protection in a frost free greenhouse in winter.
Watering is crucial for these plants, regularly watering throughout the growing season is important. If the rootball is allowed to dry out the tree is likely to die.
Prune any long shoots in early summer and again very lightly in autumn to maintain the plants overall shape.
