The Chinese Juniper Itoigawa has very fine, cord like, mid green foliage. Its gnarled and twisted trunks and branches lend themselves to dramatic driftwood effects. They are excellent subjects for bonsai shaped in the contemporary sculptural style. Young branches can also be shaped using wire. They are easy to keep
outdoor evergreens, making them a popular choice.
Location
An outdoor species, the Chinese Juniper can be placed in full sun throughout the growing season.
Temperature
In temperatures below -10°C move to a frost-free shed or greenhouse. During the winter, junipers can take on a brown or reddish hue when exposed to frost, this is nothing to worry about, they will turn green again in the spring.
Watering
Water regularly but sparingly, giving the plant more water in summer than in spring or autumn. In winter keep the compost just moist. This plant will not thrive in waterlogged soil.
Pruning
When wiring be careful not to trap the foliage under the wire and make sure to check the wire after a year.
Repotting
Check to see if your tree needs repotting every 3 or 4 years.
Feeding
Feed during the growing season. Always read the instructions.
