This vigorous Mediterranean shrub has been cultivated for thousands of years for its precious resin, which is edible and has been used for centuries as a mastic and as an aromatic gum or spice. It is also a medicinal plant. They have attractive green foliage and red-tinged stems — the male plants produce red flowers while the females bear green ones. The use of lentiscus for bonsai is only fairly recent.
Location
It makes a lovely plant as an outdoor bonsai in Mediterranean and subtropical regions. It can sometimes be grown as an indoor bonsai in temperate climates (if kept in a cool enough room).
Temperature
It can tolerate salt-laden winds, which sweep off the sea, as well as some frost. In temperate areas, treat pistacia as an outdoor plant in the summer months but provide some winter protection from very hard frost. This plant loves full sun.
Watering
Although the Pistacia is a mediterranean plant which grows in arid regions, it still requires regular watering. Keep moist at all time.
Pruning
Prune regularly in summer to late autumn.
Repotting
Check if your tree needs repotting every 2 or so years.
Feeding
Feed your plant in the growing season with a half-strength general fertiliser.
