Juniperus chinensis 'Blaauw' was introduced to Europe from Japan more than a century ago. The foliage of this cultivar has a bluish tinge when grown in the ground, but, when used in a bonsai pot, the leaves turn mid-green.
Location
An outdoor species, the Chinese Juniper can be placed in full sun throughout the growing season.
Temperature
In temperatures below -10°C move to a frost-free shed or greenhouse. During the winter, junipers can take on a brown or reddish hue when exposed to frost, this is nothing to worry about, they will turn green again in the spring. Exposure to frost temporarily turn the foliage yellow or brown.
Watering
Water regularly but sparingly, giving the plant more water in summer than in spring or autumn. In winter keep the compost just moist. This plant will not thrive in waterlogged soil.
Pruning
When wiring be careful not to trap the foliage under the wire and make sure to check the wire after a year.
Repotting
Check to see if your tree needs repotting every 2-4 years.
Feeding
Feed during the growing season. Always read the instructions.
Please Note: The picture is for guidance only. It is not generally possible to send the tree in the picture. Please note that measurements given are approximate not exact. Measurements given are from the bottom of the pot to the top of the tree, the pot colour may also vary from the picture. Due to their nature trees grow and whilst in our care may need pruning, this means the tree that you receive may differ in size to that given in the description. The appearance of the tree may vary depending on the season.
