Crataegus or hawthorn is an outdoor deciduous plant that grows like a shrub in most cases and it takes many years to develop thick trunks. Different varieties and cultivars bear single or double flowers and range in colour from pink to deep red.

Location

Although it can be kept in full sun throughout the growing season, it will benefit from being given some shade in very hot weather.

Temperature

Protect flower buds from late spring frosts.

Watering

Ensure the soil never dries out.

Pruning

After flowering prune back old shoots to encourage new flowering.  Take care to leave some old shoots if you want to encourage berries.

Repotting

Check your tree to see if it needs repotting every 3-4 years.

Feeding

Feed directly after flowering and follow this with low-nitrogen feed in late summer.

Please Note: The picture is for guidance only. It is not generally possible to send the tree in the picture. Please note that measurements given are approximate not exact. Measurements given are from the bottom of the pot to the top of the tree, the pot colour may also vary from the picture. Due to their nature trees grow and whilst in our care may need pruning, this means the tree that you receive may differ in size to that given in the description. The appearance of the tree may vary depending on the season.
