Punica granatum Nana (Dwarf Pomegranate) is a deciduous tree meaning it won't retain its leaves all year round. It is grown mainly for its beautiful, orange- pink flowers and tiny fruit. In Japan, cultivars with twisted, gnarled trunks are highly prized. Pomegranate is usually trained into the informal upright style and it is widely available from bonsai nurseries.

Location

At Herons we keep our Pomegranates outside either under a shade net or in an unheated greenhouse, please note that these trees would need cool conditions if you are planning to keep them inside.

Temperature

The pomegranate is native to a wide area from south-east Europe to the Himalayas. It will only flower in full sun and fruits will only form in autumn when there are temperatures of 13-16°C (55-61°F). In winter, when the pomegranate has no leaves, the temperature can be as low as 3°C (37°F), and plants will even tolerate 0°C (32°F) for short periods. Plants that are too warm in winter develop weak, straggly shoots (if indoors keep in a cool room or unheated greenhouse if possible). Move indoor bonsai outdoors in the summer to a position in full sun. If this is not possible, keep it in a sunny spot indoors.

Watering

Water when soil gets dry. When the flowers open and during the summer they will need checking more often and may require more water.

Pruning

Best done when the tree is dormant in winter.

Repotting

Repot your tree when it needs it. Possibly every 2 or 3 years.

Feeding

Do not fertilise when the tree is flowering. Feed from early spring to summer with low nitrogen feed. Always read the label.

Please Note: The picture is for guidance only. It is not generally possible to send the tree in the picture. Please note that measurements given are approximate not exact. Measurements given are from the bottom of the pot to the top of the tree, the pot colour may also vary from the picture. Due to their nature trees grow and whilst in our care may need pruning, this means the tree that you receive may differ in size to that given in the description. The appearance of the tree may vary depending on the season.
