Pinus Thunbergii or Japanese Black Pine is a classic species of tree to use for Bonsai purposes and it is also very popular in Japan.

The Pinus species that have short needles are most suitable to grow Bonsai from. Black Pines are very tolerant of poor conditions, surviving in nature on nutrient-lacking soils. The tree has thick needles up to 12cm (4’’) long, which can be shortened by regular pinching.

They can be grown outside with lots of sun (doing so helps decrease the needle size, needles grow longer if the tree doesn’t get enough sunlight). Pine trees are very hardy, however they still need to be protected during the winter.

Bonsai Pines dislike permanent moisture so be careful not to over water. Good drainage is necessary.

Please Note: The tree in the picture is the one we will send. Measurements given are approximate not exact and are taken from the bottom of the pot to the top of the tree. Due to their nature trees grow and whilst in our care may need pruning, this means the tree that you receive may differ slightly in size to that given in the description. The appearance of the tree may vary depending on the season.
