Shapely Japanese White Pine, Pinus pentaphylla, wired to shape. Approximately 26-35cm tall. Planted in a Japanese ceramic pot. Please note tree shape and size may vary.

Japanese white pine is one of the most popular evergreen conifers for bonsai. It is an elegant tree with deeply fissured, greyish bark. Soft needles, borne in tufts of five, are green-blue on the outer surface and blue-white on the inner.

Location 

Place outside in full sun in growing season.

Temperature

Though pines are hardy in most temperate areas, if there are prolonged periods of cold protect in an unheated shed or greenhouse. 

Watering 

Be careful not to overwater as pines dislike constant moisture. Water regularly in growing season. In winter keep the compost moist, but never waterlogged. Allow the surface of the compost to dry slightly between waterings.

Pruning

Remove candles in early to mid summer to maintain the trees shape. 

Repotting

Check if your tree needs repotting every 3-4 years in spring.

Feeding

Apply small quantities of rapeseed fertilizer in the gorwing season. Do not overfeed. Always read the instructions before feeding. Feed healthy trees from March to Summer until the candles are cut.

We have been running our bonsai classes and workshops at Herons for over thirty years where they have been the source of inspiration for many bonsai enthusiasts. Currently we run a number of different workshops by Peter Chan or a Herons Team Member. 
 
What is a Workshop?
All our workshops are hands on sessions for all abilities, ranging from beginner to advanced levels. You can learn many aspects of bonsai in this class. 

These workshops book up fast so please do book if you would like to attend.

We do have a waiting list that you are welcome to join by emailing [email protected] letting us know how many places you are looking to book, please accompany this with your contact number, this means we can call if we get a late cancellation.

If you are looking for a 1-2-1 class with Peter Chan he can normally offer a 2 hour time slot on a Monday or Tuesday morning starting at 11am finishing at 1pm. 

You can also book a 1-2-1 with one of our experienced Herons Team Member should you wish.
