Acer Palmatum or Mountain maple is one of the most popular outdoor, deciduous trees for bonsai. It is a flamboyant, showy tree which is fairly easy to keep.

Location

Keep outside all year. In early spring, the new leaves emerge a pale green or bronze colour, they turn slightly darker in summer and finally flame red in autumn.

Temperature

Mountain maples can withstand cold temperatures but only for brief periods. If prolonged freezing conditions are forecast, protect in an unheated greenhouse or shed. In summer they can be kept in full sun and will produce better autumn colours than if grown in the shade. However, provide protection from fierce sunlight so that the foliage doesn’t become scorched.

Watering

They like a lot of water. Never let the soil dry out completely.

Pruning

Prune to maintain the trees shape throughout the year.

Repotting

Check if your tree needs repotting every few years.

Feeding

Always read the label when growing.

Please Note: The tree in the picture is the one we will send. Please note that measurements given are approximate not exact. Due to their nature trees grow and whilst in our care may need pruning, this means the tree that you receive may differ in size to that given in the description. The appearance of the tree may vary depending on the season.
