Pinus mugo ‘Mugo pine’. Dwarf mountain pine is a sturdy outdoor, evergreen, compact tree with short branches, snarled trunk with scaly, grey bark, and green needles borne in pairs. It can be used for any bonsai style, although gnarled specimens are best trained in the driftwood style and young plants look food as informal upright, cascade or windswept bonsai.

Location

Place in full sun during the growing season.

Temperature

Easy to keep they don’t normally need protection in the winter, although if temperatures fall below -5°C you may want to bring into an unheated greenhouse.

Watering

Water regularly to keep compost moist.

Pruning

Prune unwanted branches any time from spring to autumn.

Repotting

Check if your tree needs repotting every 5-8 years.

Feeding

Apply a general fertiliser in spring and autumn, but do not feed between mid-and late summer as overfeeding will encourage coarse growth and thickening of the branches.
