This outdoor, evergreen shrub or small tree is an ideal species for bonsai. It looks lovely and is easy to keep. It has dark green prickly needles, borne in threes, and spherical fruits, which ripen to black. Plants eventually develop gnarled, twisted trunks, which make them ideal for driftwood. They are excellent subjects for bonsai.
The Common Juniper does best if it is placed in full sun throughout the growing season. In temperatures below -10°C move it to a frost-free shed or greenhouse. During the winter, junipers can take on a brown or reddish hue when exposed to frost, this is nothing to worry about, they will turn green again in the spring.
When wiring be careful not to trap the needles under the wire and do not leave wire in place for more than a year. Water regularly but sparingly, giving the plant more water in summer than in spring or autumn. In winter keep the compost just moist. This plant will not thrive in waterlogged soil.
