This is a truly magnificent Ficus Bonsai Tree, standing approximately 53-57cm tall with amazing aerial roots, looks incredible from all angles. Comes in a Ceramic Bonsai Pot. Due to the size, shape, value or weight of this piece it would need to be collected from our nursery.

The Ficus Retusa is one of the easiest of all the Indoor, evergreen species for bonsai. It is a popular tree for bonsai enthusiasts as they can have striking trunks in addition to Ariel roots that give the tree its character and popularity.

The Ficus genus belongs to the family of mulberry plants (Moraceae). The Retusa is among the most tolerant, versatile and trouble-free bonsai trees  making them popular for indoor use. 

There are hundreds of varieties of the Ficus, but a common one for Bonsai is the Ficus Retusa, this is often shaped in an s-curved trunk and has dark green, oval leaves. 

Location

As the Ficus is a tropical tree it can be kept inside. However it benefits from being in full sunlight so try to avoid putting it in a shady position. 

Temperature 

They need a minimum temperature of about 10°C or 50°F during the Winter and to be kept just moist. They like humidity so having a drip tray is advised.

Watering

The watering of your bonsai must never be neglected. Apply water before the soil appears dry - never allow the soil to become completely dry or waterlogged. You may need to water more during the summer months but please observe your tree to decide what’s best given the conditions it is in. 

Pruning

Prune regularly to maintain the trees shape. How often will depend on the season and how vigorous the tree is growing. 

Feeding 

Apply a general fertiliser every 2-3 weeks during the growing season, reduce this to once a month in winter (always read the label before using a fertiliser) 

Repotting

Repot your Ficus when it needs it. Possibly every couple of years.

All our workshops are hands on sessions for all abilities, ranging from beginner to advanced levels. You can learn many aspects of bonsai in this class. 

These workshops book up fast so please do book if you would like to attend.

We do have a waiting list that you are welcome to join by emailing [email protected] letting us know how many places you are looking to book, please accompany this with your contact number, this means we can call if we get a late cancellation.

If you are looking for a 1-2-1 class with Peter Chan he can normally offer a 2 hour time slot on a Monday or Tuesday morning starting at 11am finishing at 1pm. 

You can also book a 1-2-1 with one of our experienced Herons Team Member should you wish.
