Lovely flowering Malus halliana Crab Apple Bonsai Tree approximately 33-40cm tall. Displayed in a ceramic pot. Please note pot colour may vary (blue, cream, brown, green)

Malus or Crab Apple is a hardy, outdoor, deciduous (sheds it leaves in winter) tree which is easy to keep. It has pretty flowers and colourful autumn fruit. A true delight for someone requiring a point of interest all year round. They are grown for their attractive flowers and their delightful, small fruit, which are the right scale for the bonsai. These plants are either self-pollinating or they can pollinate other crab apples nearby. 

Location 

Keep outside all year in full sun. 

Temperature 

A relatively hardy trees and needs little protection from freezing temperatures. However please note that frost and very cold temperatures are likely to brown the fruits. 

Watering

Water regularly throughout the growing season. Ensure the tree doesn't dry out when bearing fruit in autumn In winter keep soil just moist.

Pruning 

Prune in late autumn after leaves have fallen when flower buds are easier to identify. 

Repotting

Repot your tree when it needs it. Possibly every 2-3 years.

Feeding 

Apply a general feed after the fruits have set, in mid summer. Always read the label.

We have been running our bonsai classes and workshops at Herons for over thirty years where they have been the source of inspiration for many bonsai enthusiasts. Currently we run a number of different workshops by Peter Chan or a Herons Team Member. 
 
What is a Workshop?
All our workshops are hands on sessions for all abilities, ranging from beginner to advanced levels. You can learn many aspects of bonsai in this class. 

These workshops book up fast so please do book if you would like to attend.

We do have a waiting list that you are welcome to join by emailing [email protected] letting us know how many places you are looking to book, please accompany this with your contact number, this means we can call if we get a late cancellation.

If you are looking for a 1-2-1 class with Peter Chan he can normally offer a 2 hour time slot on a Monday or Tuesday morning starting at 11am finishing at 1pm. 

You can also book a 1-2-1 with one of our experienced Herons Team Member should you wish.
