The Cotoneaster is an outdoor evergreen and is easy to train as bonsai. Grown for their colourful berries, small delicate leaves and pinkish-white flowers.

Easy to propagate, young plants will grow quickly and are ideal starter material. 

Location 

Keep these tree outside all year. Can be kept in full sun throughout the growing season. 

Temperature

They are hardy in temperate area, needing protection of a frost-free greenhouse only when prolonged spells of cold weather are forecast. 

Watering

Water regularly when plants are in flower, take care not to wet the flowers which are easily damaged. Keep compost damp during the winter. 

Pruning 

Cotoneasters can be pruned regularly to keep their shape.

Repotting

Repot your tree when it needs it. Check every couple of years.

Feeding

Feed during the growing season, always read the label.

We have been running our bonsai classes and workshops at Herons for over thirty years where they have been the source of inspiration for many bonsai enthusiasts. Currently we run a number of different workshops by Peter Chan or a Herons Team Member. 
 
What is a Workshop?
All our workshops are hands on sessions for all abilities, ranging from beginner to advanced levels. You can learn many aspects of bonsai in this class. 

These workshops book up fast so please do book if you would like to attend.

We do have a waiting list that you are welcome to join by emailing [email protected] letting us know how many places you are looking to book, please accompany this with your contact number, this means we can call if we get a late cancellation.

If you are looking for a 1-2-1 class with Peter Chan he can normally offer a 2 hour time slot on a Monday or Tuesday morning starting at 11am finishing at 1pm. 

You can also book a 1-2-1 with one of our experienced Herons Team Member should you wish.
