Lovely Chinese Juniper Itiogawa, between 40-44cm tall in a ceramic bonsai pot.

The Chinese Juniper Itoigawa has very fine, cord like, mid green foliage. Its gnarled and twisted trunks and branches lend themselves to dramatic driftwood effects. They are excellent subjects for bonsai shaped in the contemporary sculptural style. Young branches can also be shaped using wire. They are easy to keep outdoor evergreens, making them a popular choice.

Location

An outdoor species, the Chinese Juniper can be placed in full sun  throughout the growing season. 

Temperature

In temperatures below -10°C move to a frost-free shed or greenhouse. During the winter, junipers can take on a brown or reddish hue when exposed to frost, this is nothing to worry about, they will turn green again in the spring.

Watering

Water regularly but sparingly, giving the plant more water in summer than in spring or autumn. In winter keep the compost just moist. This plant will not thrive in waterlogged soil. 

Pruning

When wiring be careful not to trap the foliage under the wire and make sure to check the wire after a year. 

Repotting

Check to see if your tree needs repotting every 3 or 4 years. 

Feeding

Feed during the growing season. Always read the instructions.

We have been running our bonsai classes and workshops at Herons for over thirty years where they have been the source of inspiration for many bonsai enthusiasts. Currently we run a number of different workshops by Peter Chan or a Herons Team Member. 
 
What is a Workshop?
All our workshops are hands on sessions for all abilities, ranging from beginner to advanced levels. You can learn many aspects of bonsai in this class. 

These workshops book up fast so please do book if you would like to attend.

We do have a waiting list that you are welcome to join by emailing [email protected] letting us know how many places you are looking to book, please accompany this with your contact number, this means we can call if we get a late cancellation.

If you are looking for a 1-2-1 class with Peter Chan he can normally offer a 2 hour time slot on a Monday or Tuesday morning starting at 11am finishing at 1pm. 

You can also book a 1-2-1 with one of our experienced Herons Team Member should you wish.
