Zanthoxylum piperitum the 'Japan Pepper’ is a deciduous tree, which means it will shed it leaves during the winter. It has glossy, dark green pinnate leaves, which turn yellow in autumn. In early summer, greenish-yellow flowers appear, and these are followed by tiny, red berries. Pepper is an attractive indoor bonsai.

Location

Although this tree is treated as an indoor plant it needs a bright position such as a windowsill. Move outdoors during the summer and stand it in full sun.

Temperature

From Autumn - Spring it prefers temperatures around 16°C and 23°C. During winter ensure it isn’t in a draughty position.

Watering

Ensure that it is watered well throughout the growing season. In winter, keep the compost moist and never allow to dry out completely as this will kill the tree. Misting is advisable if the rooms atmosphere is dry.

Pruning

Prune the tree to keep its shape, do not defoliate the tree completely.

Repotting

Repot when needed, possibly every couple of years.

Feeding

When the plant starts to grow (Summer-Autumn) feed with general feed once a month. Always follow instructions on the packet.
