Chaenomeless japonica is an outdoor, deciduous shrub with lovely flowers. It has glossy, mid-green leaves, and in spring clusters of flowers, followed by fruit. Its tendency to produce multiple stems means that it can be grown in the clump style.
Location
In full sun or partial shade throughout the growing season.
Temperature
The Japanese Quince is a deciduous tree, it will drop its leaves in autumn. Hardy in temperate areas, needing no special winter protection.
Watering
Water flowering quince regularly throughout the growing season. Do not let it dry out in summer, keep compost just moist in winter.
Pruning
Do not prune whilst flowering. Prune back old growth after flowering. Do not prune too hard after mid-summer, or the next year's flowering shoots will be removed. Do not pinch out new shoots in late summer.
Repotting
Repot whene needed, check every 2-3 years.
Feeding
After flowering feed quince with high-nitrogen fertilizer. During mid- to late summer feed with low-nitrogen fertilizer. Always read the label.
