Celastrus orbiculatus, also known as Chinese bittersweet or oriental bittersweet, is an outdoor perennial, deciduous woody vine. It makes a good bonsai due to its fast growing, climbing habits and attractive berries.
Location
Celastrus orbiculatus is a hardy, fast-growing vine native to East Asia. As a bonsai, it thrives best in full sun to encourage flowering and fruiting, though it will tolerate partial shade. Ensure it gets plenty of light during the growing season to maintain compact growth.
Temperature
This species is cold-hardy and can tolerate temperatures down to around -20°C / -4°F once established. However, if grown in a small pot, it’s advisable to protect it from prolonged or deep freezing, especially below -10°C / 14°F.
Watering
Water regularly during the growing season, keeping the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Avoid allowing the soil to completely dry out, especially in hot weather. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
Pruning
Celastrus grows vigorously and needs regular pruning to maintain its shape and prevent it from becoming too leggy. Prune during late spring through summer to control growth, and remove unwanted suckers or excessive runners.
Feeding
Feed once a month during the growing season (spring to late summer) with a balanced liquid or pellet fertilizer.
Repotting
Repot approximately every 2–3 years in early spring before active growth begins. This helps prevent root-binding and refreshes the soil. Use a well-draining bonsai mix.
