Camellias are outdoor
late flowering (December through to March/ April) and
evergreen and are among the most beautiful flowering shrubs to have been introduced to the West from China and Japan. Although they produce handsome, glossy, dark green leaves, they are grown for their lovely flowers, which vary in colour from white to deep red and in shape from single to formal double. The flowers are borne from winter to spring. Camellias with small leaves make excellent bonsai and are best grown in the informal upright style
Where to keep them
Camellias (zones 6-8) are found in the wild in woodlands from northern India to China and Japan, and some species occur in Java and Indonesia. Most are hardy in temperate areas and, even when there is snow on the ground, flowers will still appear. However, you should move your bonsai to a frost-free place if prolonged periods with temperatures below 2°C (10°F) are forecast. If plants are outside in late winter or early spring, position them so early morning sun does not damage frosted buds. Heavy rain also harms delicate blooms. Camellias should be kept in partial shade in the growing season as excessive sun will scorch the leaves.
Please Note: The picture is for guidance only. It is not generally possible to send the tree in the picture. Please note that measurements given are approximate not exact. Measurements given are from the bottom of the pot to the top of the tree, the pot colour may also vary from the picture. Due to their nature trees grow and whilst in our care may need pruning, this means the tree that you receive may differ in size to that given in the description. The appearance of the tree may vary depending on the season.
General Care of Outdoor Bonsai
In many ways outdoor Bonsai can be easier to look after than indoor species. However, here are some general instructions.
Location
All Bonsai need sunlight some will thrive given direct sunlight and other will tolerate some shade (check each species for more information).
Protect the tree during prolonged cold periods. Either in a shed or unheated greenhouse.
Watering
Watering is the key to keeping the bonsai alive. In dry spells water your bonsai regularly ensuring that soil is damp but not soggy wet
Pruning Shoots
Prune new growth regularly to maintain the shape of the bonsai.
If you don't prune often the tree will lose its shape and become straggly.
Prune when new shoots grow which is normally in Spring and Summer.
Pruning Roots or Re-potting
Re-pot or root prune only when the tree gets pot bound,
Usually every two or three years.
Spring is the best time for doing this.
Prune enough roots off to make space for new soil.
Feeding
Feed once a month during the growing season usually Spring- Summer.
Use liquid or pellet fertiliser (always read the label for instructions)
