Acer palmatum 'Shishigashira' or Lions Head Maple is an outdoor deciduous maple that has tight foliage, which is particularly attractive, and the small leaves make it very suitable for bonsai. Shaping is normally done by pruning alone.
Location
Keep outside all year. In early spring, the new leaves emerge a pale green, they turn slightly darker in summer sometimes with oranges and finally turning to reds in the Autumn.
Temperature
Japanese maples can withstand cold temperatures but only for brief periods. If prolonged freezing conditions are forecast, protect in an unheated greenhouse or shed. In summer they can be kept in full sun and will produce better autumn colours than if grown in the shade. However, provide protection from fierce sunlight so that the foliage doesn’t become scorched by placing it in a spot with dappled shade.
Watering
They like a lot of water. Never let the soil dry out completely.
Pruning
Prune to maintain the tree's shape throughout the year.
Repotting
Check if your tree needs repotting every few years.
Feeding
Always read the label when growing.
Please Note: The picture is for guidance only. It is not generally possible to send the tree in the picture. Please note that measurements given are approximate not exact. Due to their nature trees grow and whilst in our care may need pruning, this means the tree that you receive may differ in size to that given in the description. The appearance of the tree may vary depending on the season.
