Metasequoia glyptostroboides or Dawn Redwood is an
outdoor, deciduous tree which has bright green foliage during the summer, becoming tawny pink and gold in autumn before dropping its leaves altogether. The Dawn Redwood is a good choice for bonsai as it can be trained into most styles, especially informal upright styles.
Location & Temperature
It is a hardy tree in temperate areas, however it may need protection in the winter where temperatures fall below -10°C. Keep in full sun during the growing season, but protect from very hot sunshine, because the leaves may be in danger of burning.
Watering
Water regularly and generously throughout the growing season. In hot weather you need to water two to three times a day. Never allow the root ball to dry out.
Pruning
New growth is very soft, so allow shoots to harden before pruning.
Repotting
Check to see if your tree needs repotting every year or so.
Feeding
In spring you can use a high nitrogen feed and then a general feed in late summer. Always read the label.
Please Note: The picture is for guidance only. It is not generally possible to send the tree in the picture. Please note that measurements given are approximate not exact. Measurements given are from the bottom of the pot to the top of the tree, the pot colour may also vary from the picture. Due to their nature trees grow and whilst in our care may need pruning, this means the tree that you receive may differ in size to that given in the description. The appearance of the tree may vary depending on the season.
